Wild Camping in the Deep , Dark Forest as Winter hits the Mountains

first snows it had been mountains in
Scotland and today I was heading towards the summit’s there was an interesting
summit feature I want to get it when the forecast was wild when the inventory for
those tolls that was meeting an old friend he was
gonna do a wild count with me before we headed up onto the summit’s and it was
really quite or terminal daily Nicolay and it wasn’t 200 in here and the colors
are fantastic first things first where the soro are liquids for later on
we were perhaps going to be needing a wee dram would sweet go our tents set up
and we’d been up onto the mountain so first things first is getting the
supplies ready for later well first things first as you saw there
I got the whiskey lady I’m good for the Wildcat today and unlike the last few
videos we’ll have been burying I’ve got the tape with me today and it’s a lot
more breezy in fact if you can if you can see behind me here you see the
ripples on the walk let’s just lock an eland and that means walk and I’ll and
though you made me it goes a little while and it’s got we Castle ancient
castle on and then with all the walk there and we’re starting from here and
we’re going to scrub through the ancient Caledonian excuse me that water
streaming from the eyes forest and maybe maybe get a hole up behind there and
what have you but the plan is to try and get a shelter sport I’m moving ahead up
to the summit of this hole for sunset but we shall see how they hope the day
progresses because it’s very windy and there’s been some snow showers this
early early wasn’t even winter it’s late autumn it’s at the end of October and
there was a nice dusting of snow today which is great too and with tom-toms
just coming at some point and rock dance and when I hear during the season and
into the forest and yeah I’m a bit apprehensive we’re going to get fetched
but that’s priority number one so let’s get clerical and we’re going week tom
and we’ll get cloud blowing up the whole it’s about Hitler bash in here billion
stuff though isn’t it yeah yeah it’s they probably want walkins or what have
you so yeah we’re coming through the the ancient Caledonian pine forest as heaven
and who knows we get higher up and these couple of walkins here and we’ll just
make a note if there’s any we are to camped and yes so far the weather’s
pretty fair there’s no there’s no saying of this weather front coming up from the
south so we may get clear skies tonight huh
we drank Tom so far nice nice windy is the I would say is deceptively cold in
the wind it looks like a lovely sunny day which it is but it’s cold when that
wind blows yeah okay know that in the in the forest year voters yeah I think I’m
for a short sharp shock as we yeah yeah hey doctor at least phantom it to camp
as well yeah there is nowhere yes that’s priority number one we’re strolling for
summer camp so shall we yeah crack on and find the pitch yeah before it gets
dark let’s go it’s alright isn’t it Tom could
possibly be a over here look to birth wha as we just walked along we’ve been
really struggling to find a flat piece or not a flat piece of going but at
least which doesn’t need deep in Heather and just here there’s a flat but but
we’ve had a look down just beyond that looks pretty promising doesn’t it looks
probably sheltered yeah it’s flat it’s spacious yeah perfect perfect so we’re
going to go down there are no setup and then think about heading up the hill so
we’re gonna get the patch set up let’s do it after leaving the track behind we headed
into the forest and scouted a boat for a while trying to find a suitable place
for our campsite eventually we found a good Patrese with some lovely flat soft
ground we decided to set up camp it really was an idyllic sport and it was
really quite sheltered from those / feeling ones and once we’d go our
backpacks off we said again the tents up and set up a wee base camp before
heading high into the mountains so you may notice here that I am pulling up my
sleeping mat here using a bag and lose our eagle-eyed amongst you all more and
usually I hand pump this up using these bits yeah now that’s been one of my
bugbears very nice sleeping mat was the fact that I thought you couldn’t blow up
using this but you can and I’ve got then really from relegates court to thank me
for that I was morning.the both tip and we wrote in the car we just brought this
over from husband oh yeah just do it this way so much got
a couple of years I’ve been mulling about it pump it up using the hands when
it could be use the Bible thank you very much very anyway this is a sweet mic one
of the one of the tips I’d say about this is Neverland fleet on Thule I
always have a bit of gifts you can sink into it if it’s really a budget it makes
it really uncomfortable so if it’s a bit too tight what wall do is I went to the
tin and just deflate that’s really bit when I’m lying on it just so it’s
perfectly I’m sinking into it just nice like this make sure our mates sleep so
much better yeah topped up for the day right let’s go there we go
super fantastic so we have as you can see we’ve got the tents out lettuce
lovely we this lovely pettier this in this corpus of of all the ancient pain
trees on the world it’s absolutely beautiful
and it’s flat it’s a very first piece of non here that he cloned that we saw and
it’s actually sheltered from the prevailing winds which are really quite
strong enemies we’ve set this up we thought you know we’ve got their reign
of it to earth to get the top of the soul for sunset I’ve taken most of the
heavy items over my bag keeping my ex you know emergency gear all the camera
gears there for the sunset fingers crossed we get one I’ve got my
doovy Jack if it gets cold up there basically an ace campaign or not camping
it’s gonna be nice putting our bag back home so we may send late for the hike up
the hill so that’s going to be next or will finish off setting up camp and
we’ll get out the hill well so we’re heading up the path and
the rate of the rate of the forest snow and it feels I would not note on the net
that’s brutal yeah it’s very cold and very windy yeah
you can see the the peak so I’ll cut that food you can see the peaks of the
Monroes are just that are skimming a snore nom unfortunately the way the
Front’s blocking the Sun at the moment so we’re we’re kind of hoping that mate
chef that we better follow shows so it’s sunset the Sun might be able to
illuminate it but still who cares just needs to be oh and the views I think
followed up here are going to be spectacular you can see the walk so
though we backtrack on before sunset let’s go well that was tough I made the mistake
of suggesting that we cut across to see if some team but I groaned was bogey
have his a bit energy-sapping stop absolutely nothing so we’ve reached a
Ridgeline here and I’ve got 100 metres up the arse to get to the summit and you
can see now Suns going down so we really are chasing the light but the light over
here is fantastic and I think Tom being a photographer is really in a coordinate
of whether it is stall and capture this leap illuminating the kilgore massive
but I think we’re gonna we’re gonna crack on off over there the summit of
klieg do and see if we can catch the Sun going down from there but there yeah I
am tired I am back up but one of you up please okay let’s absolutely brilliant
right take you through the camera we engage as we gained elevation the way that I
got more wild more wintry and more windy that forecast since I’ve had a nail on
the head and this hill just seemed to go on and on and it was a real slog we were
getting tired really tired but we didn’t stop we were really scared we were gonna
lose the light and not make it to the summit before the Sun came and when we
did see the qiyan Evers are welcome st. whoo-haw it’s one there so in a topic
they do they’ve lifetime over there the Cure there is take some patient
wonderful way down there you may not make out on the GoPro it’s absolutely
fantastic and all the way up let’s swap brain to you over Leslie there the hills
of the Cairngorms massive have been catching the last reason why it’s just
been absolutely wonderful and if I’m heading along here there’s a there’s a
summit barn here I don’t know if you remember a few weeks ago when I was like
a few months ago when I was ahead in the Cairngorms I went to this the summit
Barnes and were quite big well there’s one here as well I think you can see
it’s called the Argyle stood and I’ll tell you all about it when I get that’s
just enough ten minutes walk so I’m not going to think any pictures I’m gonna
get down here and then get the camera whoo feels great to be I’ve to do
absolutely fantastic great let’s get going scramble dear wow what a place
so it’s AC whoa then if you can see me this is me and taupe with the Argyll stone and what a view of God down here hey snow showers are coming in and
elastically you can see it right up to go any neck in the walk over that’s
fantastic and I really wanted to visit this barn or tour because we’ve got
history behind it the reason is called the Argyll stone is the waging goes the
the 7th earl of argyll a guy called Archibald Campbell came up marched his
Protestant troops north for a big battle with the Marquis of Huntley Glen loved
it and they got beaten by the smaller army and they were forced to retreat
over the the Cairngorms an apartment they came over here to do some shelter
by this big toward here because there’s not much else here can imagine a wild
mate this would be a big only the only places he could find shelter wound about
here that’s where the waiting control soundly breezy now were not far from
sunset and the waist is fantastic I’m not sure if this snow showers gonna hurt
us but it’s absolutely so I’m gonna shut up I’m gonna get my camera and take some
snaps to foot of elusive weight but what I please whoa yes look at that fantastic so I’ve just left
the Argyle stood hopefully he could make out what was seeing a bit of history
behind it beautiful and there there’s a snow shower coming in I don’t know if
it’s gonna reach us I’m just heading back to see Tom now I
can see him over here if he can me come out in his orange jacket but we go up
here just in time I think the light we probably missed the best Italy to be
honest with you but there is still fantastic and it was great to go over
later another great timing it’s nice to see some snow when dick tober absolutely
beautiful and I think it’s time to get back though and it’s going to be dark in
the next 40 minutes 45 minutes and this snow comes on yeah you don’t wanna get
caught it now I do it so yeah would see Tom that is there and then by June 5
don’t be scared fantastic alright so there’s like we found on I hate to say
it looks like that rains coming towards us reen snorts no steam ahead back that
light’s gone yeah I knew which is yet one yeah yeah I I plead a vote on the
old Argyll still it was good I’m glad to go up there for this mountain
yeah it’s but time we called it feels like middle of well middle of the winter
really doesn’t just disappeared no sir right yeah yeah let’s get like the base
camp the late feeding and the weather
deteriorating we were both keen to get back to the shelter of the camps and we
made a hasty retreat off the hole before long the light started to fade and it
was time to crack open the head torches so we could find our way back down into
the forest so as you can see it’s dark now and we’re literally just the part of
the path would we head down to camp why you always stand on like a big bit
of ground so I look really sure in this video from complet I think it’s quite a
nice day it was really what held up there I really was in them I think we go
off the hill just insane didn’t we it’s like so we’re looking for to gun down
maybe having a weeds along and some food so but it’s gonna crack down and it
can’t get out done an airball report back and over you are so here we are right are we camp saying
somebody’s obviously been here before us and unfortunately bola they’ve had a
fire here at some point which is a bit disappointing because there are stones
around that as you’ve probably all read and heard the fire usually born snowing
but we certainly haven’t touched if you are J boils here I’ve got my my chicken
tikka heating up in there I’m going for time what do you have told me just
whiskey okay you’re on the whiskey of course right so Tom brought some whiskey
and then it’s Eisley Glenmorangie I couldn’t find any Glen love it I thought
Glen loved it would have been perfect after that we story about the arrow of
Argyll losing the battle at Glen lover and the Marquis of Huntley and these
things but yeah I think yeah Glenmorangie like no I’m fine I’m gonna
have my chicken tikka first thank you very much sure
so yeah whiskey tea to celebrate our a retrack there was hard work I mean not
yeah that peak isn’t a Munroe it’s not core but I think it’s even agree on so
there’s no paths and it was tough going good I mean you don’t realize how much
of a path it helps your progress and we’re really tough it was like wading
through Chico and finally certainly up to your ankles and moss which you’re
shrinking and thin there was snow on the top and we were rushing up to try and
get sunset well I’m gonna describe it as an optical illusion
you just get net and you never got to the top yeah just kept in doing and
moving away from you yeah I was just yeah we’d look at our feet for 10
minutes and think we would look up and it would be closer enough this summit
wasn’t any closer anybody made it to talk just in same awfully there’s been
some good shots there are more have you and I’m looking forward to this food so
I’m gonna turn the camera off they were gonna have some food and then Matt will
see what we would see there’s loads of stars oh so make good play with the
camera and see if we get some shortest anyway have some food after playing about the camera I’m
getting some photographs we’re headed back to the camp where we sarahbooth
finishing off that Glenmorangie it really was tasty and after a few drums
that was soon painter hit he and get a good night’s sleep I’ll just woken up and themers or see
famous 7:24 and sunrise is in a boat where no half hour or maybe just before
you eat or just the rune devotee or Wahhabi and I was like could eat me
sleep I think I went to sleep I didn’t know the back of pain and I woke up look
up once or twice but certainly down here in forest it was lovely and calm and
sheltered and I had a yeah probably the best night’s sleep I’ve had in this
scarp probably something to do with her not being a wooden drought on or in the
team that like their usual ISM the summit so anyway up I don’t think
because one of the disadvantages of camping down in the forest is you don’t
get the panoramic views to to wake up to sunrises and what have you and I think
the sun’s going to be coming up over the back of the clearing dorms anyway so
I’ll probably not rise until don’t after the same teams that maybe they don’t
8:30 but I mean we’ll get up get a coffee or and you just my ways you live
mornings you’ve all got far we’ve got a 45 minutes 1000 back to the car for
pianist pretty much a gentle don’t hold good idiom so that’s going to be fun so
let’s get some caffeine I student started to feel the cold
having pulled myself through that nice warm sleeping bag in pink and I’m elder
Burt account for the reweld that tom was still fast asleep so I decided to team
my camera gear for a we walk the hill to see if there was anything happening at
sunrise they see you walking here so it was all
quiet nice and quiet back at camp told moszer was just starting to star on this
tape when I waste I thought the leak was coming up and sunrise it was a bit 10
minutes gonna fall maybe come up and just see if I can catch the Sun coming
up over the horizon I wasn’t quite sure how far north or south I think it will
almost be juist at the moment because we’re we’re not far from the the autumn
equinox anyway it’s not happening there’s nothing but cloud over there and
actually I looked at our an app called Sun calc and zoomed into my position and
the sunrise it’s kind of over a Cairngorm master so me and maybe a
better or two before the Sun rises high enough to get over those four thousand
foot mountains but it’s its nicest thing up here and just over here you’ll see
the shoulder of klieg do and that’s with the way we went out what you last night
up and around and there the summit was just over the black they are and I can
see up towards the the bigger mountains these are that klieg do is eight hundred
and forty meters which is pretty small in comparison to these huge Kilgore
Mountains which a lot of what you share exceed the height of 1200 meters and
that’s just lovely so I thought you have to get a bit of a view get better fresh
here and I think I’m gonna take one or two snaps the Dilys pretty flat there’s
not much happening I may get some pictures of those snow cover tolls it’s
always it’s always really nice to see Arab least snow in the first Ranger when
it gives me hope although I had that false or white here as you can see there wasn’t much
happening in terms of photography just includes cutting exhaust those
snow-covered mountains it was time to get my camera and head back thing to buy
to the camp and get some breakfast which was really looking forward to it was a lovely leisurely morning we
didn’t rush any anything in particular it wasn’t going to take us long to get
back to the car so we spent about 18 mulling about the camp I got my coffee
and my breakfast and after that all that was left to do was to break down the
camp get the tents away and leave more trees as we headed back to the car it’s nice and warm and relatively calm
down here let’s pull the opposite of what we experienced WMS has finished I’m
back at the spot where I started up and around you’ll see you walking inland
behind me here well out by this Morning Sun it’s absolutely gorgeous
Tom’s going back to the van and I’m gonna be back in the car I’m gonna get
stripped down and then head down the road it’s been I greatly adventure we’ve
experienced winter wasn’t far off freezing last night either and it’s just
been lovely what a great part of the world to come to the forest and the high
mountains just brilliant so I’m gonna say no fear I’m told the next time stay
safe out there and thanks for watchin Oh bicycle
