My name is Erich Wiesner and we are at WIEHAG in Austria. WIEHAG is one of the oldest timber construction companies in
Europe. It was founded in 1849 and I am running this company as a family member
in the fifth generation. My father was a pioneer in driving the timber
construction companies, the know how forward. We love challenges and the
Macallan project is a really challenging project. It’s a really unique piece of
architecture. It is wonderful to work together with Richard Rogers because
he’s one of the most well-known architects in the world. He has received
the architectural Nobel prize called the Pritzker Prize. If we look at the roof it
looks like a landscape actually. It looks beautiful and I’m eager to go
there. I also want to see the Macallan people because they produce their
product Whisky in wooden barrels and we are working with timber so I guess there are some similarities It’s fantastic that they are using wood
instead of steel in their construction for this beautiful roof at this project
Timber and wood is the only renewable building material in the world. It has
less impact on our environment and I guess it’s the material of the future.
Timber is not only environmentally friendly material it’s also a very
competitive material and it’s a technical material. The advantage of
timber really comes into work when you think of wide span buildings up to two
hundred meters without any columns. So the know-how and the real
competitive edge of WIEHAG is the competence we have in engineering
together with a very modern production. The Macallan project is a really
engineering driven project. The architects have made a very beautiful
design but you need engineers to make this buildable and that’s part of WIEHAG.
That’s our know-how and that’s what we really love to do.
