UF/IFAS College of Agricultural and Life Sciences – Dean Elaine Turner

[MUSIC PLAYING] Dean Elaine Turner: Our role in the College of
Agricultural and Life Sciences is teaching and students. And so our purpose
is to make sure that our students are learning
the very best, most up-to-date science, so that when
they go out into the world and into their career path,
they can use that science to help people, to
help environments, to help communities. We really have
programs that represent the breadth of the
whole University, from very basic molecular
biology through a range of physical and
biological sciences into social sciences, education,
communication, business. So almost any field of study
that you have an interest in, we probably have a program
that’s related to that. We share the university’s vision
to be a premier institution. In fact, our vision is to
be the premier land grant college of agriculture
and related sciences in the country. So I believe in the area
of teaching and learning, we are already leading the way. We’re already an institution
that other universities would put at the top– at the top of our game. We have to look on a broader
scale across the world, how do we contribute to
feeding a global population, but at the same time, feeding
those people in a way that promotes good health;
in a way that protects natural resources; in
a way that promotes economic and social growth. And so our role
now is to prepare students for that new world. Not the world of 1862, when
the land grant institutions were founded, but the world of
the 21st century and beyond. [MUSIC PLAYING]
