Timber Ridge Elementary hosts “Homework Diner”

Tonight, we had a “Homework Diner.” We want to make sure that parents are able
to help their children at home with the curriculum. It’s known that parents really do want to
help their children, sometimes they just don’t know how. At Timber Ridge, we decided that we want to
do something to reach out to those parents to make it a little bit easier for them. Our goal tonight is to empower parents to
become teachers. Not only to teach their kids at home, and
to feel empowered and become that expert at home, but also to teach other parents. Our goal would be for them when they hear
another parent say their child is struggling with math, be able to share some of these
ideas and maybe to explain the mathematics here at school and just keep spreading the
word, because they are our best advocates. This is something I have seen done in the
past. I’ve done it in the past, and so when I brought
it to Mrs. Green, I said, “can we do this?” and she said, “let’s try it.” It was really a collaborative effort this
evening. Obviously our teachers invested time and energy
to get materials ready, Child Nutrition cooked the meal for us tonight, so we appreciate
that. A community church, United Heritage Methodist
Church, donated all the food this evening. If parents at home are able to see how we
teach, they’ll be able to help their students even more. I think that’s a big takeaway tonight.
