UWI is really strong agricultural
science and also economics, we will be pleased to have you join us for a
master’s we have specialisations in Agricultural economics, soil science and plant
nutrition, genetics and breeding and also in agricultural systems. The degree
starts with core broad units from a number of faculty members from across
different schools and then you start in your specialisations with experts in
their fields A feature of a course is that you study
science as well as economics so you can bring together the biology, the physical
sciences, the atmospheric sciences and then economics, making decisions
about future production assistance During the master’s you have the
opportunity to do research projects where you get to work one-on-one with
supervisors who are experts in their fields as well as using a facilities. We
have fantastic labs glass houses and the university farm which is available for
your research work. Some of our units have field trips as well as the
opportunity to interact with industry and we are looking to set up a number of
internships for our students during the summer period. The degree has a
cohort of international students, getting you ready for international careers so
agriculture is a growing industry where we’re going to need more scientists in the
future as well as more economists to help guide decisions so if you join
agricultural science you can get careers working in agronomy, in farm
management, in banks, in companies agribusiness in international organisations,
development organisations so there’s really endless opportunities. Agriculture is a multi-disciplined
science you get to work with soil scientists, plant biologists, hydrologists,
economists, chemists. Many different disciplines. Our staff and students have
many international connections which you can benefit from so come and join us and
help feed the world. The most interesting thing of this course is learning about the complexities and also the challenges of modern plant breeding and my aspirational aim for my research project is is to develop a technique that will
enable turned over of 7-8 generation in mung bean. The most enjoyable thing about The Master of Agricultural Science for me is the small class sizes and the ability to have an educated discussion during your lecture time.
