How Marco Farfan navigates high school and playing for the Portland Timbers

He doesn’t play like an 18 year old. He’s
calm beyond his years. But when you look at his face he’s got a baby face. I don’t think he’s shaves yet. Sometimes I forget that he’s going to school on top
of the soccer and having to commute back and forth and you know compartmentalize
everything that’s that’s not easy. Wake up, come to practice and then go to school. It’s always something I wanted to do be like a local player and play for the professional
club. I would always like imagine myself like I just didn’t expect it to be as
soon as it happened. In Seattle, we went to Cheesecake Factory and there was a
bar and we didn’t know that there was like this area of the bar and we sat
down at a table and then they asked us for IDs and I couldn’t be there so we
just had to wait an extra 15 minutes for another table. School’s is right up here. He shows up to class every day. He’s
diligent about his work. This class, it’s an advanced class. He’s done really well I mean I can’t really say his grades but he’s succeeded throughout and so I don’t
think he’s at all sacrificed his academic potential. I don’t get to hang out as much with my friends or go to basketball games, football games or none of that stuff but as long as I’m playing and have my family and friends around,
I’m happy with that. My friends, they were just surprised. I
didn’t tell anybody that I signed and once they found out and I got to class
they showed me their phones and it was on the Portland Timbers page saying that
I signed with with them and they thought it was a joke or a little prank or
something. They’ll tease him a little bit and all in good-natured teasing. He’s
pretty well loved I think because of demeanor even as a younger student two
years ago, very adored by his peers just because of his personality. I think the
whole school is really proud of him. I want to get really good as a player and
as a person but right now as long as I just focus on right now that’s the only
thing that’s going to help me because if I started thinking too far ahead then
and that’s risking my performances right now and stuff so. My dad and my brother mostly introduced me to soccer when I was around five years old and you know
I just liked it from the start. There’s massive pressure at this level. Sometimes kids can’t cope with that. They can’t deal with it even though they are a good player and they just can’t deal with that. I think that shows his mentality, how strong it is. I was actually pretty nervous. I got the
chills. I’ve never been in an atmosphere that big. During the National
Anthem when the army does that those things with the scarves that’s when I
was like oh this crazy. What people aren’t seeing you know in the last several months is he’s
improving. So the next time he gets in the next game you’ll probably see a
little notch of improvement out of him because he’s been working extremely hard. As long as I’m playing, I’m happy.
