Fruit Tree Spraying For Dormant Trees

Fruit Tree Spraying For Dormant Trees

Hi, I’m Tricia a California organic gardener here to offer you some tips on how to help your home orchard thrive! As Ben Franklin said an ounce of prevention
is worth a pound of cure, and that is very true in the home orchard. Today I’m going to be applying
dormant spray to my newly planted fruit trees, peaches! And it’s a perfect day for it, there’s no
wind, there’s no rain in the forecast. I just want to make sure that the roots of the
peach trees are very well irrigated. Water them first! A good rule of thumb as to when to do your dormant spraying is three times during the dormant
season and that would be around Thanksgiving or after the leaves have fallen off. Again at New Year’s, and then the last
time around Valentine’s Day or before the buds break. There’s 2 types of dorman sprays… oils and fungicides. I can’t emphasize enough how important it
is to read the entire label. You want to make sure that your using the right product
for the right type of fruit tree. You also want to make sure you’re using the
right type of product for the type of pest or disease that you would like to control. You also want to make sure that you apply it exactly the way the label says, in other words should you mix them together, use them separately, how much water to add, everything that you need to know, read the label! Today I’m going to be applying an
organic dormant oil called Safety Side which is labeled for peaches and it controls soft-bodied insects and
mites by suffocating them! I’m also going to be applying a fungicide called Liqui-Cop this is going to control peach leaf curl,
shot hole fungus, bacterial spot and brown rot. Safety Side and Liqui-Cop can be mixed together and sprayed on a peach tree for other fruit varieties it may be
necessary to apply them separately. I’m gonna mix my pre-measured amount
of fungicide with water according to the label but I’m going to make sure that I don’t mix
more than i can use today. I’m well equipped to start spraying! I’ve got my long sleeves, long pants, gloves, goggles and my respirator. You want total spray coverage so
spray the tree thoroughly to the point of runoff. Well, I hope that my ounce of prevention
is going to provide pounds and pounds of peaches! So, until next time let’s Grow Organic for Life!
