Audrey Pond, business student This lot in southeast Portland has been vacant and overgrown for a long time. A few neighbors recently had the idea to turn it into something else something that the neighborhood could use and enjoy a community orchard I started working on the Malden Court
Community Orchard project last fall though my civic engagement class which was a part of PSU’s
Sustainable Neighborhoods Initiative I’m now a mentor to students in other classes helping them be more effective in working with our community partner by building on the work that’s already been done. It’s been a win-win relationship. Students have been able to get hands-on experience with civic engagement knocking on doors and engaging community members about real issues in their neighborhood. And our community partners have been able to reach way more of their neighbors than they could have done without us. The community expects to begin building the orchard this spring. And I can’t wait to see our efforts bear fruit.
